Rules

Listed below is the set of rules for our baseball league. It is specifically important when it comes to keeper aspects and trading draft picks. Please refer to this if a question comes up and I am unavailable to answer it. This will be our "rulebook," so if you see anything that looks wrong, or think of anything that is not addressed here, please let me know.

Statistics
  • The league is a standard 5x5 rotisserie league, using the following statistics:
  • Batters - Batting average, HR, RBI, Runs, Stolen Bases
  • Pitchers - Wins, Saves, ERA, WHIP, Strikeouts

Rosters
  • There will be one starting batter at each position in the field, plus one utility player. The game limit for each position is 162.
  • In addition, you will be able to start three starting pitchers, two relief pitchers, and any two other pitchers. The entire pitching staff will be limited to 1250 total innings.
  • There are six bench spots, which can be used for players at any position. This means there are a total of 22 active roster spots.
  • There are 3 DL spots, which can be used for any player indicated as DL-eligible by Yahoo.com. These spots do not count against your maximum roster size of 22.

Keepers
  • After each season, each team will select up to eight players from their team to keep for the next season. All players not selected as keepers will go into the draft pool for the next season.
  • Keeper lists must be submitted by the announced date each season.
  • There are no position limitations on who you can or cannot select as a keeper.
  • If a team elects to keep seven players instead of eight, they will receive a compensatory pick after the first round. If a team elects to keep six players instead of eight, they will receive a compensatory pick after the first round and a compensatory pick after the second round.

Draft Order
  • There will be 14 rounds in each draft. These 14 players, plus your 8 keepers, fill out the 22-man roster.
  • The draft order will be similar to the NBA amateur draft, in which the teams finishing in spots 7 through 12 will go into a lottery, while the other 6 teams will draft according to their final standings every round.
  • The lottery will be conducted during the MLB playoffs, by drawing tickets out of a hat.
  • The #12 team will receive 6 tickets, the #11 team will receive 5 tickets, the #10 team will receive 4 tickets, the #9 team will receive 3 tickets, the #8 team will receive 2 tickets, and the #7 team will receive 1 ticket.
  • Tickets will be drawn for the #1 and #2 picks. The remainder of the draft positions will be determined by a reverse order of final standings.
  • In the event of a tie in the standings, the order will be decided by comparing (in this order) (1)Wins, (2)Batting Average, (3)Runs, (4)ERA, (5)Saves, (6)RBI, (7)Stolen Bases, (8)WHIP, (9)Strikeouts, and (10)HR. If all ten categories are tied, the order will be decided by a coin flip.

Draft
  • All drafts will take place on weekends, to be coordinated by the commissioner so as to accommodate all owners in the league.
  • Drafts will be conducted using face-to-face, online, and telephone correspondence. The preferred method of communication will be through an AIM chatroom, which will be set up by the commissioner at least twenty minutes prior to the draft.
  • If you wish to draft a player who is not in the Yahoo player list yet, you may do so. What you'll have to do is leave a roster spot open for him until the point at which he becomes available. At this point, you will pick him up off of free agency with no waiver penalty. If at any point you fill the roster spot intended to be left open for the drafted player, you lose your rights to the player, and when he becomes available, he is fair game for the waiver wire. The commissioner will be open to the possibility of a mistake ONLY IF the player picked up did not play a game for the team in question. If a player plays a game, no appeal will be listened to.
  • Players not in the Yahoo system can only be acquired through this method. Any players not in Yahoo's system and not on any rosters after the draft must pass through the standard waiver priorities when they are added.
  • Each owner will be given 2 minutes 30 seconds to make each selection. If a selection is not made in this time, an automatic pick will be made on the team's behalf.
  • Because draft picks can be traded, the draft order will be posted prior to the draft, and each team will be notified when they "go on the clock." All traded draft picks will also continuously be listed on this website up to the day of the draft.
  • If an owner is unable to attend the draft, that owner must make arrangements with another owner (besides the commissioner) to conduct the draft for him. If arrangements are not made, the owner's picks will be skipped, and the owner can fill out their roster after rosters have been entered.

Basic Trade Information
  • The trade deadline is assigned as the latest allowable date in Yahoo's system.
  • There will be a 2-day review period after any trade is accepted. During this time, any owner in the league can contest a trade.
  • The commissioner will review each trade, and will also listen to any owners who contest any trade. After taking all information under consideration, the commissioner will either allow or reject each trade.
  • The most important consideration for each trade will be to assess whether or not the trade was made by each owner with the intention of improving their team.

Trading Draft Picks
  • Trades involving draft picks MUST be reported to the commissioner, either via e-mail or, for trades that occur during the season, by posting the trade, including any players involved, as a message in the league.
  • During the season, draft picks can only be traded for an equal number of draft picks.
  • For example, it would be acceptable to trade a 3rd round pick, a 5th round pick, and a 14th round pick for a 4th round pick, an 6th round pick, and an 8th round pick. Each team trades three draft picks.
  • However, it would not be acceptable to trade a 4th round pick and a 5th round pick for a 1st round pick. The team trading their 1st round pick would need to add another pick to make it two-for-two. This is so that no team has more or less than 22 players after the draft.
  • Trades involving only draft picks can occur anytime, including during the season after the trading deadline.

Offseason Trades
  • Offseason trades can be made at any time.
  • All offseason trades must be reported to the commissioner.
  • When an offseason trade is reported to the commissioner, the commissioner will send out an e-mail to the league. Trades will be processed 4 days after the trade is reported to the commissioner.
  • Offseason trades after keeper lists have been submitted involving both players and draft picks must be balanced in their overall numbers.
  • For example, it would be acceptable to trade Kerry Wood, a 9th round pick, and a 10th round pick for a 3rd round pick, a 4th round pick, and a 7th round pick. There are three total items on each side of the trade.
  • However, it would not be acceptable to trade Kerry Wood, a 9th round pick, and a 11th round pick for a 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick. This trade would be three-for-two.
  • This is so that no team has more or less than 22 players after the draft.

Rule Changes
  • In order for a rule change to take place, it must pass through a vote. Proposed rule changes will be posted on the forum and emailed to all owners. Owners will submit their vote on the issue either via email back to the commissioner or as a reply post to the rule change.
  • In order for a rule change to pass the vote, the vote must satisfy two criteria. First, the rule change must be approved by at least 4 owners. Second, the rule change must be approved by greater than 50% of the votes cast.
  • Assuming no special circumstances, all rule changes will take place starting the season following two future drafts. For example, if a rule change is approved in November of season 4, the rule change would take effect after drafts 5 and 6, for season 6.
